What is the first step to doing work that has a positive impact AND allows you to leave contracting?

I ran this poll last week to see what other LinkedIn users thought about this.

I didn’t ask who has actually followed through and been successful.

For me, success is being able to earn a good income, get pleasure from the work you’re doing and know that you are making a contribution to people or planet in whatever form.

In this post I wanted to explore these the first steps but also the missteps to uncover a strategy that IS actually going to be successful in these terms.

Get a job with a charity

This could be a good idea especially if there’s a charity whose purpose resonates strongly with you. Unfortunately it is very likely you will have to accept a drop in income. And you will also still need to find and apply for a job where you have the right skills.

If you’re a BA this might be a way in for you.

It also could lead to promotion to address the fall in income.

What you will need to consider is both the culture and the work that you love to do. If you continue doing BA work but you don’t enjoy that any more you are at risk of burnout. Sacrificing yourself for a bigger cause is a…
