How to use ‘oh shit!’ moments to help guide you

Have you ever had an ‘oh shit!’ moment? You know when you have a strong emotional reaction. It might be when you find yourself having a meltdown. You feel panic and feel that you’re having a disaster and it is ALL GOING WRONG!

I am driving a minibus part-time to supplement my income whilst I am growing my business. It was very important to me to find a job that gave me both the time and headspace to build my business. I recognize too easily how a job can be all consuming. It needed to be simple, uncomplicated and without any politics.

One morning recently I left at 6am and, in my early morning half awakeness, I hit a high kerb pretty hard. This wasn’t the oh shit moment but it did shake me up. I stopped the bus and the tires all seemed to be ok.

20 minutes later I was on the M25 (London’s orbital motorway) when I noticed the bus was leaning to one side and pretty quickly realised that I probably had a problem with my tires. I had to join the M1 and find the hard shoulder pretty quickly before it went really flat.

At this point I was swearing to myself and was getting upset. I started thinking about not getting to my job and the costs as I knew I would have to pay for the repair. This poorly paid job would now be costing me money. I was going backwards!! It was not a great start to the day.

A couple of days later I met with a couple of coaching colleagues to discuss the community we are cocreating. I was starting to reflect on…
